Terrace according to Wikipedia
A terrace is an outdoor part of a building, usually intended for both practical and architectural purposes. A terrace is typically larger than a balcony and is usually located above ground level, with roof terraces being no exception. A terrace is primarily designed for people to spend time on, for example for relaxation, social events and other activities such as barbecuing, sunbathing, and so on. Unlike a balcony, a terrace does not project from the mass of the architecture, and it differs from a loggia in that it is not roofed.
Terraces were popular with Functionalist architects, who made use of modern flat roofs and often also the railings of terraces as a simple and functional aesthetic element finishing the façade. They were widely used especially on Functionalist villas, but also, for example, on the famous Barrandov Terraces restaurant, which they also gave its name.
Basic Installation Information
At first glance, laying a maintenance-free composite deck always looks very simple, but appearances can be deceiving.
First and foremost, it is necessary to think carefully about how we want our deck to look. It is best to consult with experts in the field, or possibly a landscape architect. They should prepare at least a laying plan (a sketch of the installation and final design) or, better yet, a 3D design, which we will provide free of charge if you are interested. This will give you a much better idea of what the finished project will look like. At the same time, they will tell you how the construction of the terrace will proceed. They will discuss the individual steps with you: construction readiness, laying direction, and other important parameters for a perfect terrace.
Construction readiness
The most important part of the entire terrace. Although you will not see it after the entire terrace is completed, it is the same as with any other construction: the foundation determines the quality of the house.
Therefore, it is not a good idea to skimp on this part. Everyone chooses the most acceptable type of foundation. Here you have a choice - gravel bed, concrete foundation, or metal structure.
The best foundation for a terrace is a concrete slab. This will ensure a stable surface and the strength of the entire terrace. Although it is more expensive and more complicated to prepare, the investor will recoup the costs when laying the individual profiles.
Another option for the investor is a relatively inexpensive but complicated foundation = gravel bed. This type of foundation is very simple. The area of the future terrace is marked out, curbs are concreted around the perimeter, the interior is filled with crushed stone (gravel), and the entire area is compacted. It is good to let the prepared area settle on its own for at least two months and then repeat the compaction. Before laying, it is good to level the surface again and compact it repeatedly. Then you can start laying the decking.
The last option is metal grating. Terraces cannot always be laid on the ground. Terrace areas are often designed on a slope, on the upper floor of a house, or on a partial slope. In these cases, a metal structure must be built on which the walking surface is laid. We have had the best experience with this. The strength of the terrace is guaranteed, and the spacing for the individual support profiles is precisely prepared. At the same time, other possibilities open up for creating an atypical space using all possible nooks and crannies and creating a screen or just a railing.
Terrace foundation
Once the substrate is well prepared, it is time to lay the foundation grates. These have precisely defined spacing, which must be adhered to. If you look at the craftsmen's work and measure them, the meter should show a dimension of 30-35 cm axially. This dimension is determined by individual manufacturers according to the technology used. If these spacings are not adhered to, the floor profiles between the individual supports may sag over time. The terrace supplier can save money relatively easily with this step, but it will cause considerable problems in the near future. Our system of WPC terrace profiles and clips allows the terrace to be dismantled anywhere in the area, one board at a time. This is a great advantage for terraces on gravel or terrace foil.
The laying of the boards themselves also depends on the foundation of the support profiles. The more precise the foundation, the easier and faster the laying itself. Therefore, laying on gravel is much more complicated and time-consuming. Rubber pads must be used under all support profiles to ensure water flow under the supports. There is nothing to underlay on a metal structure, which guarantees an ideal level surface and water drainage. On the other hand, it is good to anchor the supports to the structure at least at the point where the deck is to be secured and from where it will expand.
Laying floor profiles
Place the floor profile on the prepared grates. Anchor it with starter clips or screw it to the support from above. Check the flatness (or slope) and screw in the first row of standard clips. Each manufacturer specifies the gap between the profiles, so each installer should be equipped with a special gauge from the manufacturer. We recommend these pads because they make it easier to align the boards. The installation of the floor profiles themselves is the same. For the last board, use a starter clip again or screw the board from above, and in the case of solid profiles, simply sand the perimeter of the terrace, or in the case of hollow profiles, trim it.
The terrace is laid, and all that remains is to try it out, move in the garden furniture, and enjoy your first coffee.
